Apps, we all love them, don’t we? From keeping in touch with friends to helping us organise ourselves, to simply getting a quick game or two in on a lunch break, there’s seemingly an app for everything – even boating.
Yes, the helpfulness of apps has even extended to our beloved marine industry, providing those involved in the industry and even those who are just budding boating enthusiasts, with a number of helpful tools and tricks, all from the comfort and ease of their own smartphone.
Looking to try out a few for yourself? Here’s a rundown of our top five apps for boating enthusiasts…
Whether you’re a budding beginner or something of a nautical expert, there’s always something new to learn with the Sea Sector app.
Featuring lessons that meet the requirements set out by the International Maritime Organisation, you can be sure to find a wealth of information and advice that will quickly turn you into a fountain of knowledge when it comes to the marine industry.
Our personal favourite feature is the app’s maritime dictionary, which features over 2000 terms with easy to understand explanations. Know the difference between an apron plate and an arbor? Well, you soon will with the help of the Sea Sector app.
Millions of boats and ships travel our planet’s waters every day, but did you know you can look up and track the vast majority of them using just your Android smartphone?
Using the power of ship and boat radars and combining it with Google satellite imagery, users can easily track and watch millions of boats and ships as they travel the waters. Got a favourite selection of ships and boats? Ship Tracker lets you add them to your own personal list for easy access whenever you like.
Boating HD Marine & Lakes
Being able to track boats and ships is one thing, but as boating enthusiasts, we know the real fun comes from getting out on the water for real.
Planning beforehand is always essential though, and that’s where Boating HD Marine & Lakes comes in. The app features always up to date nautical and sonar charts, although we personally love the community aspect in that users can contribute their own local information to help others nearby.
The app also features automatic routes, giving you a recommended navigational route before you set out.
Going out to sea is always exciting, yet you should always ensure you have the knowledge and the tools needed to keep yourself and others safe.
One way to help achieve both at the same time is through the use of the Safe Skipper app. Useful for anyone at sea, regardless of experience, the app features an abundance of advice on managing your boat or ship at sea, with the majority also featuring graphics and illustrations for easy understanding.
