The Engineering Drawing Checker role for which CPT is currently recruiting is ideal for a candidate wishing to work in an environment of rapid technical change, to help develop innovative new technologies by applying an expert level of understanding in their field.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • To ensure the quality of the design departments’ Technical Product Documentation, that is produced in accordance with both published national/international standards, and company design standards in a timely fashion in line with programme release schedules
  • In line with the departments’ drive for continuous improvement, contribute to the identification of any identified technical shortcomings present in TPD produced by Cox and recommend/propose solutions to these
  • Check and approve engineering drawings from the points of view of; technical completeness, clarity, conformance with standards, dimensional accuracy and the correct specification of materials and processes
  • Check and approve tolerance stack analyses for technical completeness and correctness
  • To assist the Principal Design Engineer with promoting and developing a generally higher level of engineering drawing, GD&T and tolerance stack analysis skills across the team through one-to-one mentoring and group training activities where required

Skills and Experience

Necessary knowledge and experience:

    • NVQ level 3 (or equivalent) or higher in engineering or a relevant scientific
    • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in a design/manufacturing/inspection environment which required the use and interpretation of engineering drawings
    • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to manage one’s own workload and time
    • Experience of:
      • Engineering drawing authoring or checking within a mechanical design environment, preferably in a relevant field such as internal combustion engines, transmission, pumps and other complex machinery
      • Working within an environment of continuous and rapid technical change
    • A thorough technical understanding of mechanical engineering drawing principles, including (but not limited to):
      • Fundamentals such as projection angles, line types, view types, dimensioning methods, title block and change block information
      • Different drawing types and their usages; part vs GA for example
      • Theory and application of GD&T
      • Datum systems and the appropriate usage of the different types of datum systems
        • Including a comprehensive understanding of the use of datum target systems as applied to complex shaped/moulded parts, and how these translate into real world manufacturing and/or inspection jigs and fixtures
      • Limits and fits
      • Surface roughness specification
    • A thorough technical understanding of relevant industry-standard TPD standards, namely:

    o  BS 8888:2017

    • ISO GPS framework as published by ISO/TC 213
      • With an expert understanding of the fundamental (as defined by ISO/TR 14638:2015) standards, including ISO 8015:2011
      • A good understanding of the chain & chain link system of the ISO GPS matrix model
    • Working understanding of ASME Y14.5-2009 with a focus on understanding the fundamental differences that exist between Y14.5 & ISO GPS with the ability to spot subtle ASME vs ISO nuances in engineering drawings
    • Good working knowledge of the latest relevant GPS standards as they relate to the above necessary skillsets; ISO 1302:2002 for surface roughness specification for example
    • Good understanding of real world inspection methodologies and their associated limitations and advantages, and how applied GD&T translates to inspection requirements and ultimately part cost
    • Ability to apply the above knowledge in the appropriate manner to reduce part cost & reduce scrappage through the practical application of modifiers such as MMC
    • A thorough technical understanding of tolerance stack analysis from a functional point of view, including:
      • Worst case, mean & range analysis
      • Statistical analysis methods including RSS
    • A good understanding of general mechanical engineering principles, including:
      • Manufacturing processes & methods
      • DFM&A
    • Sound documentation capabilities and thus experience with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint for example

Desirable knowledge and experience:

  • Experience of:
    • Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software such as Teamcenter or Windchill (preferably Teamcenter 11, with experience of Workflows within Teamcenter to support electronic design release, drawing markup and general paperless management of engineering data)
    • Basic user knowledge of Siemens NX (preferably version 11) software
